The Carbon in Our Electricity
Petaling Jaya, 6 May 2026: Every kilowatt-hour of electricity carries a number most people never see: how much carbon dioxide it took to make it.
MFCB’s electricity comes from two sources that burn no fuel to generate: the Don Sahong Hydropower Project at the Mekong River Basin in Laos PDR, and solar.
In 2025, our Renewable Energy Division generated 2,404,678,990 kWh of electricity. The Division’s direct (Scope 1) emissions for the year were 83,470,000 grams CO₂e — and those came from site vehicles and maintenance equipment, not from generating power. Spread across everything we generated, that works out to 0.03 grams of CO₂e per kilowatt-hour. Effectively zero.
We also measure it a second, wider way. Counting not just our own fuel, but our purchased electricity and our value chain — Scope 1, 2 and 3 together, totalling 1,183,490,000 grams CO₂e for the year — the figure is 0.49 grams of CO₂e per kilowatt-hour. Still a very small number.
We share both figures because each one answers a different question. The first shows how clean our electricity is the moment it’s generated. The second shows how clean we are as a whole business — including the equipment, suppliers, and everyday operations that support that generation. On its own, either number would only tell you half the story — together, they give you the complete picture.
This is why the Renewable Energy Division sits at the centre of MFCB’s net zero strategy.
