Promoting Environmental
Sustainability

At MFCB, we prioritise environmental conservation across our operations and are committed to minimise our impacts where possible. We are committed to address the climate crisis and work towards a more sustainable future where people, planet and business are in balance. We focus on four key areas across our Divisions, including:

Road to Net Zero

MFCB is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. We reduce our carbon footprint through renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste reduction — measuring our progress across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in line with the GHG Protocol and Malaysia's climate disclosure requirements.

Progress to date:

  • 4.15 MWp total solar installed capacity across divisions for internal consumption
  • 39,226 GJ of renewable energy (solar + hydropower) consumed internally in 2025
  • GHG emissions intensity reduced by 7.8% from 2022 baseline
  • 28,022 tCO₂e total carbon avoided since 2021
  • Scope 3 screening underway across all 15 categories

Water Management

At MFCB, we recognise the importance of efficient water use and conservation. As we navigate challenges like population growth and climate change, innovative water management approaches are essential for ensuring a resilient and water-secure future across all our operations.

Progress to date:

  • Zero incidents of non-compliance with water quality or quantity regulations in 2025
  • Daily water level monitoring at 7 locations along the Mekong River at DSHP
  • 624 tonnes of river waste collected from Mekong channels in 2025 (approx. 12 t/week)
  • Rainwater harvesting and sensor-based water conservation across multiple

Circular Economy

In our commitment to fostering a circular economy, we implement the 10R Framework across our operations — from refuse and rethink through to recover. Our revised goal is to reduce waste to landfill intensity by 35% by 2030 (from 2022 baseline).

Progress to date:

  • 95% of waste generated were diverted from landfill
  • 3,595 tonnes of non-hazardous waste reused; 3,709 tonnes recycled
  • 6.27 tonnes of organic waste composted and distributed to local farmers at DSHP
  • 44.4% reduction in plastic bottles and 86.6% reduction in plastic bag use at DSHP vs 2024
  • ISCC PLUS certification maintained at Stenta Films and Hexachase Flexipack

Biodiversity Conservation

In recognition of the growing importance of global biodiversity conservation, we commit to a long-term biodiversity conservation strategy with focus on our Don Sahong Hydropower Project (“DSHP”) that is located on an anabranch of the Mekong River. Our strategy includes goals to 2030 and 2050 and is aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (“GBF”) and Lao PDR’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2016 – 2025.

Progress to date:

  • 310,000 fish fingerlings released into the Mekong River since 2016
  • 9,650 tree seedlings planted since 2016 (goal: 20,000 by 2030)
  • 12 of 13 targeted fish passage locations improved since 2016
  • 906+ illegal fishing gears removed across 7 channels in 2025

Our Biodiversity Conservation Strategy

GOAL TO 2050

To have a net positive impact on biodiversity and maintain, enhance or restore the integrity of the ecosystem within and around our project area for the benefit of biodiversity and local communities.

Themes
Conservation and Rehabilitation

We will implement conservation measures to conserve existing populations of endangered species and rehabilitate important habitats.

Awareness and Capacity Building
We will engage with local communities and relevant stakeholders to enhance awareness on the importance of biodiversity.
Scientific Research
We will support the scientific community in understanding the unique ecosystems in which we operate.
Goals by 2030
We will implement two major conservation projects with measured outcomes.
We will significantly increased the awareness among communities about the importance of biodiversity
We will publish at least two scientific studies in the area we operate.
